It's interesting to see the transfer up/down stats because it feels like the dynamics here could be really different sport to sport! Thinking about softball where OU has used the transfer portal *heavily* during their 4 straight years of championships, though they have also had a decent number of transfers out. But maybe it's just easy to get an impression from the biggest stories that doesn't capture the full dynamics of what's happening.
Yea, it’s working out great for FBS teams with the most $$$. But how’s it working out for non A4 FBS teams? They keep getting their best players poached which is terrible for college football. There needs to be a one time transfer rule .
from the article: "444 players left Power 5 football programs, while only 316 transferred in, a net gain of 138 players for non-power teams." ULM (2-10 last year, 5-2 this year) is starting something like 20 transfers, probably the most aggressive transfer turnaround in the sport, and that's definitely not a money thing. UNLV's 6-2 with a star transfer QB and a star transfer WR. Tulane is 6-2 with a ton of transfers. so it's working out great for a lot of those schools! i probably should've written more about the non-power schools thriving but after doing back-to-back Army/Navy and UAB posts I thought i might be getting too niche
There are definitely some great turn around stories like ULM which is awesome. However, there is no question some of the best non A4s are getting poached from teams with more $. I listen to writers media people on how the portal is working for non A4 teams and I get mixed reviews. Perhaps it’s to early to know the long term ramifications, but hopefully it all works out for the best.
This is a good-read. MAYBE the transfer portal is the answer to evening the playing field and conference consolidation in college football. If teams like Indiana thrive, then the Big Ten powerhouses will want to find ways to expand the CFP and get more at-large spots in play…which would help non power 4 programs get in on the fun.
Player empowerment having a positive effect? Who would’ve thought!
