The marathon World Championship was incredible for everyone except the guy who lost by 0.3 seconds. PLUS wild wrestling comebacks, and stone-skimming CONTROVERSY.
Rodger I cannot help but tell you that the new American stone-skipping champion is in fact a good friend of mine IRL, I am so excited at how much play this story is getting
Know only so many words will fit into one post, and that by now we're all aware (or should be) of McLaughlin-Levrone's extraterrestrial-level greatness. Still think it's worth shouting out she didn't just win the flat 400 -- she ran 47.78. That's the new American record, the new World Championships record (breaking one set by an '80s Eastern Bloc doper), and the second-fastest time ever run (behind a 47.6 run by another Eastern Bloc doper). And it's not even her best event.
Since 1928 (women allowed to compete and more of a modern track & field programs at the Olympics)...the Olympians with 6+ gold medals are only three names.Carl Lewis 9 (gained one because Ben Johnson got caught doping), Usain Bolt 8 (lost one due to a teammate's doping) and Allyson Felix 7 (6 of 7 gold medals were on relays)... If Sydney could pull off a 3-gold-medal sweep in LA...likely be considered greatest female athlete and might have a shot to tie or take the lead from Bolt or Lewis if she competes at her fifth Olympics in 2032 like Felix (even if she ends on mixed and 4x400 relay that could be two golds)
I read your newsletters to the very end. I enjoy the variety and the don't-spend-too-long-on-one-thing aspect of it. The articles are interesting, but not overwhelming.
I subbed during Olympics because I had no way to watch it all myself. I enjoy the mix of sports. Sometimes I read sections, sometimes I skim, but always get to the bottom.
You should probably put together a formal poll if you want results from across your readership but I love both your NFL and random sports columns. I mostly like seeing you point out things that nobody else does (obscure rules, kicking, that guy who went to a div 3 school who did something amazing) more than any deep dives (unless that deep dive is to explain why that obscure thing we saw is significant). TLDR keep up the good work
Thanks for writing about wrestling! I think the great thing about Hidlay is he didn't win an NCAA Championship- in fact, he lost all four years to Penn State's Aaron Brooks (Olympic bronze last year). Guys don't normally win worlds without winning NCAAs at least once, and usually multiple times.

Sounds like she's doping
Great story on the Marathon photo finish. It got me thinking about how many races were incorrectly decided in the pre-technology era. Here's a good article about it https://www.donttakepictures.com/dtp-blog/2019/5/8/winning-by-a-nose-the-history-of-the-photo-finish

I liked the Winners/Losers column you used to do at Ringer each Monday of the NFL season.

Like getting additional sport information. Keep it going?
